The Path of the Chameleon:  The Making of the Disc

Created 5/27/2022.

Last updated 6/10/2022

There are a few ways you can make your disc.  You can draw or paint your disc.  For this exercise we will be creating a disc via decoupage.  (If you wish to use the same method for a tripod, you can leverage the story of Valens as inspiration)

Preparation

A. Gather the following items from your home:

  • Scissors
  • Paper Towels
  • Old Newspaper (optional)
  • Vinyl table protector (optional)
  • Color Printer (you might have to borrow your friend’s printer or go to a Kinkos or other store to have the print out done in color)
  • Stepping Stool (optional)

B. Order the following online and have it delivered to you prior to the Showcase Meeting. (Feel free to substitute with other sources if needed, the below links are just suggestions.)   Please be sure the printed paper disc fits within the wood circle which needs to fit inside your box’s interior dimensions.

C.  Print out the Disc on Card Stock

D.  Store your items until the Showcase Meeting

  • Your Paper Disc can be stored in the Box.
  • Your other items can be stored in a bag of your choosing and set aside until the appointed time.

Step-By-Step Instructions

A. Prepare a space for Decoupage

  • Lay down a table protector of some sort, newspaper, or paper towels (provide your own)
  • Spread out wax paper on top
  • Take out your box with the paper disc, wax paper, paper towels, decoupage, scissors, and stepping stool.
  • Put away the box and silk.

B. Cut the Disc into a circle

  • Throw away the outside cuttings.
  • Put away the scissors when done.

C. Write the date / time and name you are going to give to your disc on the back of the wood.

  • The name is optional and should not be shared

D. Decoupage the Paper Disc onto a Wood Circle

  • Technique:  Three to Four passes with the decoupage, allowing to dry for at least 15 minutes between each pass.  Clean off wedge sponge with water and dry with paper towel in between coats.  Place the wood disc on the wax paper to dry between passes (can do the same with the wedge sponge between coats).
    • First Pass:  Decoupage the back side of the paper to the disc only.
    • Second Pass:  A light thin decoupage on the top of the paper.
    • Third Pass:  Medium decoupage.
    • Fourth Pass:  Cover any areas not covered, smooth out any areas which need smoothing, etc.  Optionally can do a thicker coating.
  • Optional:  Some individuals want to also coat the back side of the disc so that the texture is the same on the front and the back.  This is optional.

E. Allow to try overnight & clean up / put away

  • May want to relocate the wood disc to a place which will be undisturbed by family/pets/etc.  Perhaps on top of the refrigerator?  Or on top of a tall bookshelf or kitchen cabinets?  (This is where the stepping stool might come into play.)
  • Clean the wedge sponge, throw away the used paper towels / wax paper / newspaper.  Clean up your working space.  Put the decoupage away.
  • Place your wedge sponge next to your disc to dry overnight.

F. Prepare a place outdoors for use of Finishing Spray

  • Find an outdoor table, bench, or chair which will not be disturbed by animals, people, wind, rain, nor snow.
  • Place a table protector of your choosing (plastic, paper towels, newspaper, etc.).   Place your wax paper on top of this.
  • Spray the finishing spray as per the directions.  Please read the directions first.  Remember to store your finishing spray properly – read the warning labels please.
  • Allow to dry for the time allotted by the directions on the canister.

G. Storage

  • Wrap in clean wax paper
  • Wrap in silk
  • Place in box
  • Store the box in your home

H. You are done with creating the object.  Next steps are to purify, consecrate, anoint and name your disc.  Followed by using your disc.
