At Home Temple Setup (Liber ABA Inspired Version)

Members can work with the 2022 Program Directors on the particulars and details of their At Home Temple if desired and/or they can reference the below.

Prior to the pandemic, we had a member who created a temple in their home which was used by the group.  But because of the pandemic, they are no longer having visitors in their home.  This has necessitated the creation of an outdoor portable temple, as well as the need for members to have their own at-home temple setup if so desired.

The Liber ABA inspired Double Cube

The temple we have been using for ritual ceremony has been the one described in Liber ABA (the previous incarnation of which is known as Book 4).  The main temple furnishings consist of a double cube, custom built by the magician to their own sacred geometry (as per the footnote in Liber ABA).  The double cube we have been making has been in two pieces and therefore conveniently used as end tables when not in magical use.  The lids of each cube have a piece inside of them which prevents them from sliding.  The top cube is hand painted whereas the bottom cube has been decoupaged.  Some individuals have painted the top cube white and the bottom cube black.  The top of the altar is a selection from The Canon by William Stirling (as per the footnote in Liber ABA).  The double cubes built in this manner have been convenient to store magical implements.

For individuals who are not handy with plywood, there are some alternatives, however, alternatives would not be necessarily to the sacred geometry of the magician.  Personally, I am a stickler for the sacred geometry.  However, your personal choice in the matter is your own.  And letting perfect get in the way of good-enough can be problematic (as my good friend Fr. Lynx kindly reminds me).  Therefore, I am including some alternatives the group found when doing a search on cubes:  (Disclaimer: Use of any of the below is at your own risk.  Thelema RVA does not accept any responsibility for your personal choice of altar construction nor type.)

  • The Uline Crate:  Pros: Low Cost, Easy to Put Together.  Caution: Would these stack with metal edges? Cons:  Metal tabs break after repeated use and therefore these are not a good choice for storage.
  • Square Pylometric Boxes:  The pros: Ability to purchase instead of make, durable, strong enough to sit on.  The cons: Benerally they are not made for storage, and most pylo boxes are not square.  Caution:  Some are stackable, some are not stackable.  Some might be too heavy.
  • The Milk Crate:   Pros: Wood, durable.  Caution: Is it stackable.  Cons: No lid for storage.  Slats.
  • Livingston 18″ Square Trunk – Kosas Home:  Pros: Storage, Wood, Stackable, Durable.  Cons: Possibly heavy.
  • 2′ x 2′ x 42″ h Camping Table:  Pro: Good for portability.  Stores compact.  Con: Can not use to store things inside when folded.  Requires separate altar cloth.

The Enochian Tablets

  • You can choose to paint your tablets on the bottom cube if desired.   Decoupage is another alternative. If you decide to decoupage, please print on card stock! (Otherwise the paper is too thin!)
  • I used the Daniel Tarr color version below, quartered each watchtower onto 4 pages each into a Microsoft Word Document, printed out all 16 quadrangles, and decoupaged them together. Don’t forget the tablet of union (I have on the top of my bottom cube).
  • If you go the Camping Table route above, have your altar cloths made at a banners and signs type store, or a store which says they do trade show signage.  I used two altar cloths which criss-cross at the top.  Essentially, they are laid over each other and Not sewn together.

The Circle

  • Wedding Linens Direct online store, table covers.  (These also work great for chasubles!)  You can phone them and inquire regarding custom sizes.  You can either sew these together, or, you can simply layer them during magical use.  This is a great choice for use on carpet.
  • For use on concrete, temporary floor decals work well.  The only con is that they are single use only.
